THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of the ultimate motorcycle roads in the Alps. The route climbs through a spectacular sequence of alpine landscapes, from green valleys and dense mountain forests to exposed high-altitude terrain above 2,500 metres.

The road itself is part of the experience: smooth tarmac, flowing bends and 36 numbered hairpins make the climb both visually spectacular and genuinely rewarding to ride.

The highlight is the approach to Edelweiss-Spitze, where the road reaches 2,571 metres and opens up dramatic views across the surrounding peaks. Further along, the Hochtor pass takes you through the highest section of the route before the road descends into the next valley.

It is not the most technically demanding alpine road, but the combination of scenery, elevation, engineering and sheer scale makes the Grossglockner a true Ride Beyond classic.

Good To Know

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a toll road and is generally open seasonally, with opening dates depending on snow conditions.

Traffic can be relatively heavy during peak summer days, especially around the main viewpoints and visitor areas. An early morning ride is usually the best way to experience the road with less traffic and softer light.

Weather can change quickly at altitude. Even when conditions are warm in the valleys, temperatures can be considerably lower near the summit, so bring an extra layer.

Take your time around the main viewpoints. Edelweiss-Spitze and the Hochtor area are highlights in their own right and are worth stopping for rather than simply riding through.

Route Notes

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is best experienced as an alpine journey rather than a simple point-to-point route. Take your time and allow room for stops, viewpoints and the occasional change in weather.

One of the highlights is Edelweiss-Spitze, the highest point of the route at 2,571 m. The final climb leads to one of the road’s most spectacular viewpoints, with sweeping views across the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Further along the route, Hochtor marks the main high point at around 2,504 m. From here, the road continues through a series of flowing bends and 36 hairpins, offering plenty of technical interest without becoming excessively demanding.

On a clear day, the views towards the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks are one of the main reasons to ride the Grossglockner. But even when the weather closes in, the changing atmosphere adds another dimension to the experience.

Don’t rush the road. The best parts are often found between the corners.
